FONT FORGETICA = SUCCESS
Today on The Guardian I ran across interesting cultural article. I found it in the"Art and design" section. Its heading sounds like: "Font of all knowledge? Researchers develop typeface they say can boost memory" and it is written by Lisa Martin. She tells the readers that recently a group of australian researchers created a font “Sans Forgetica”(it took 6 months to create it) that helps the reader remember information.
About 400 university students have been involved in a study. As a result: 57% of text written in Sans Forgetica was remembered by students better than the one in a plain Arial (50%).
There are some thoughts on this point:
  1. Typography lecturer Stephen Banham said that completing the letters' shapes is a really useful exercise for memory.
  2. Senior marketing lecturer Janneke Blijlevens: it is a "desirable difficulty" + this font helps to create a memory trace.

Moreover, this font helps people in:
  • studying foreign languages
  • overcoming memory loss
However, Banham, who has created 20+ fonts, claims that it could be complicated for people to read big volumes of text in a such kind of font.

As for me, I have chosen this article, because I always want to find some ways to improve a memory or to get an advice how to succeed in studies.

    2. Hello Yulia, I've not yet checked your blog but am hoping you've shared the tips you promised to share. It's really very important to learn and use some techniques that can help you memorise things quicker and better. Are you familiar with what is known as mnemonic rules? Here is aa good explanation: http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mnemonic

  2. Dear Melissa, you article is very ineresting! I also like to find new ways to memorise foreign words better and easier. Have you tried to use this way for memorising yet? From my point of view, it may be a little bit dangerous for our eyes to read the books which've been written in such style. Don't you agree with me? Anyway, I think it should be a good way to learn new words by heart. Thank you!
    Have a nice day!
